FG to prosecute Nigerians violating Twitter suspension – AGF

As African rights group hails FG over ban

The Federal Government plans to prosecute Nigerians flooding to Twitter via Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), to make nonsense of its suspension.

The Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, said this yesterday.

According to a statement, Malami directed the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation (DPPF) to swing into action and commence in earnest the prosecution of violators.

Meanwhile, a foremost media rights group in Africa, known as Media Rights Protectors, has thrown its full weight behind the decision of the Nigerian government to ban the activities of Twitter in the country.

In a statement released to newsmen by the group’s Director of African Affairs, Dr. Michael Warungu, in Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital, on Friday night, the group said, Twitter has deviated from promoting free speech, deepening democracy and encouraging balanced and objective journalism to dabbling into Africa’s domestic affairs by promoting regime change across the continent.

The group also accused Twitter of ruthlessly promoting its commercial interest in Africa than promoting developmental projects, democracy and its institutions in Africa.
